NerveSpinal nerve
Intercostal nerve 6
Nervus intercostalis VI sinistra
- Paired structure: one on the left and one on the right side of the body.
Roots
T6 anterior ramus.
Course
Sixth intercostal space's neurovascular plane, from spine to sternum.
Motor supply
Sixth space's intercostal muscles.
Sensory supply
T6 dermatome — the xiphoid band, front and back.
Clinical relevance
The T6 dermatome crosses the xiphoid process; T7–T11 continue into the abdominal wall, so their irritation can mimic upper-abdominal disease.
