BoneLong bone
Proximal phalanx of the second toe
Phalanx proximalis sinistra
- Location:
- Foot — digits
- Paired structure: one on the left and one on the right side of the body.
Function
The longest phalanx of each toe, forming the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint with the metatarsal head; in the great toe it is short and broad, taking the full force of push-off.
Landmarks
- Base
- Shaft
- Tuft
Articulations (joints)
- Metatarsal 2
- Next phalanx distally
Clinical relevance
Stubbing injuries commonly fracture the proximal phalanges of the lesser toes; hallux rigidus stiffens the great toe's MTP joint with osteophytes.
