Medial cuneiform
Os cuneiforme mediale sinistrum
- Location:
- Foot — medial midfoot
- Paired structure: one on the left and one on the right side of the body.
Function
The largest cuneiform, supporting the first ray's base; its wedge is broad on the plantar side, unlike the other two cuneiforms.
Landmarks
- Wedge shape — broad plantar surface (unlike the other cuneiforms)
Articulations (joints)
- Navicular
- Intermediate cuneiform
- First and second metatarsals
Clinical relevance
It is part of the tarsometatarsal (Lisfranc) joint complex; the Lisfranc ligament runs from it to the second metatarsal base — missed injuries here are disabling.
